Drop PNGs above, download JPGs. Expect a big drop, photos routinely come out 5–10× smaller, with exact before/after bytes shown per file.
When to convert: a form rejects the file size, an email bounces, a page loads slowly under full-size PNGs. For photographic images, JPG at 90% quality (the default) is visually identical at a fraction of the weight.
When not to:
- Transparency needed: JPG has none; transparent regions composite onto white. Watch for pale artwork: a white logo saved on transparency all but vanishes once that background turns solid white. To keep transparency in a smaller file: PNG to WebP.
- Sharp text and line art: screenshots and diagrams show JPG artefacts soonest.
- Further editing planned: every JPG re-save loses a little. Edit in PNG, export JPG once at the end.
Quality slider: 90% is conservative; 70–80% suits chat and email. The per-file byte counts make each setting's cost visible. Judge on numbers.
One-way door: JPG conversion discards data permanently, but the original PNG is left as it was, and nothing is lost while you keep it.
